Bilateral lateral maxillary sinus lift with bovine xenograft and autologous platelet-rich fibrin: case report and clinical feasibility analysis

Abstract

Post-extraction bone resorption and sinus pneumatization in the posterior maxilla present critical challenges for implant rehabilitation, necessitating regenerative techniques such as maxillary sinus lift (MSL) with biomaterials. This study aimed to report the clinical efficacy of bovine xenograft combined with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in bilateral MSL via lateral approach. A 54-year-old female patient with severe bone resorption underwent Schneiderian membrane elevation and grafting with a composite of Cerabone® and autologous PRF into the sub-sinus space. After 6 months, computed tomography confirmed adequate bone consolidation, enabling stable implant placement and resolution of masticatory dysfunction. The combined technique demonstrated feasibility, with satisfactory bone formation and benefits attributable to PRF’s bioactive properties (healing acceleration and vascularization). Literature inconsistencies underscore the need for controlled studies to validate its synergistic osteogenic efficacy.
